Yuko Suzuhana Wins the National Shigin Competition
Yuko Suzuhana achieved victory in the Adult Division 1 at the 2026 National Shigin Competition Finals, organized by the Nippon Gin-Kenshibu Foundation.
In addition to winning the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, the Commercial Broadcasters Trophy, and the Chairman’s Award, she earned the highest overall score among all division winners, earning the highest honor of being presented with the Princess Takamatsu Cup.
Described by the chief judge as “the most prestigious competition in the world of Shigin,” this contest requires participants to advance through rigorous qualifying rounds. Yuko Suzuhana claimed victory at every single stage—from the ward and Tokyo regional finals to the Eastern Japan championship—before ultimately reaching the top among competitors gathered from across the country.
Comment from Yuko Suzuhana:
“This was my first time entering a competition in over a decade.
Once I made the decision to challenge myself again, I revisited the fundamentals of Shigin, facing my craft from scratch through dedicated practice and research. Continuing this art form over many years allowed me to discover new insights and learn fresh lessons, deepening my appreciation for the profound depth of Shigin.
Achieving such a wonderful result is by no means something I could have accomplished alone. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who guided me and to everyone who offered their warm support.
Carrying the strength gained from this experience and achievement, I will focus on nurturing the next generation as the Grand Master of the Gindo Suzuhana School. I remain committed to sharing Shigin—a culture Japan takes great pride in—with future generations and audiences around the world.
Thank you so much to everyone who supported me.”
